18-inch dishwasher: What you need to know

What you should know about 18-inch dishwashers before you buy them.

Obviously, 18-inch dishwashers are smaller in size compared to the full-size dishwashers which are usually 24 inches in width.

The full-size dishwashers are those you can hook up the normal dishwasher space in a standard kitchen. I didn’t know this until I was in the market for a dishwasher. And since this is a major thing I will recommend that you measure your space before you start to think of shopping. Of course, the only reason you should consider 18inches for 24 inches is if you are picking up your grandma’s old dishwasher, which may still have life by the way and do a good job, why should you waste money when you can save for a better one later. However, if you do, you will have to bear with the looks and that annoying space around the dishwasher. You may also have to cope with the fact that the machine will be noisier because of the vibration and space. If all this don’t matter to you then get 18 inches dishwasher.

You won’t be able to go the other way round though. If you have 18inches space and have 24 inches machine it wouldn’t fit in.

Considerations For 18-inch dishwasher.

1. Performance

Cleaning, the size of your machine does not necessarily reduce the cleaning strength of the machine. An 18-inch dishwasher will compare well with a 24-inch machine.

Quietness/Noise (decibel rating) The rating that a manufacturer put on the label does not guarantee that the machine runs quietly all through the load. This applies to the 18-inch dishwasher as well.

Easy to Load/unload, Are the racks easily adjustable, and any basket for silverware, are the baskets collapsible to make extra room for washing big pots? The 18-inch dishwasher may not be the best for you if you have bigger utensils.

Cycle Time– 90 mins to 3 hours to finish the load. Not to worry about timing if you plan to use your machine overnight. About the same timing for 18-inch dishwashers.

2. Style

How stylish do you want your machine? Must every appliance in your kitchen match? Most buyers think about the style in terms of colors, embellishments display screen, and details. Most buyers got for black, white and stainless machines. While others tap into the fact that some companies can create custom made finishing for your machine. Of course, you pay more for this.

3. Features

It is a smart machine or a normal running one. What you want in your machine will determine what you look for.

Manual filters that must be removed and cleaned from time to time or self-clean ones (with grinders that grind food particles that can cause odor but usually noisier than the manual ones.
